Cooking and Gardening!

Picture

Students look forward every year to cooking classes! As much as we love the experience, it does help to have donations from families. We very much appreciate a donation to cover the cost of the ingredients. Thank you!

Do you like to cook? Please volunteer to join us on our cooking days! It is always helpful, and a lot more fun, to have extra hands in the "kitchen!"

We have a garden at school in which we grow various vegetables during the school year. Students are involved in deciding what to grow and making sure the plants receive water and care. If you have seed packets you'd like to share with the class, we would love to use them! The harvest is used in our recipes. In the past, we have grown tomatoes, chard varieties, cucumbers, bell peppers, artichokes, carrots, oregano, thyme and more.

The garden is an outdoor classroom, too.  We experiment, explore, measure, and observe throughout the year in the garden. We write, create, and relax in the garden, too.

                                                   Healthy Recipes
Some recipes go along with the stories we read in class and others are used in conjunction with health, science, social studies, the seasons, or gardening.

We learn about smart substitutions, wholesome ingredients, reading labels, cooking skills and more during our whole-class cooking experiences. We also learn about safety in the kitchen, food handling skills, safe knife skills (plastic knives only), cooperation and collaboration, manners in the kitchen and manners at the dining table. We try to once or twice each month. Although it is helpful to know ahead of time if you can join-in and help, don't hesitate to come in on a spur of the moment whim! The more the merrier!
