Helpful Hints and Tips
for a Fantastic First Grade Year...
Mrs. Dann's class motto:
"Practice Makes...BETTER!"
Please remember to READ at least 20 minutes every night, and record the time read on the back of the homework note each week. Your child must read the leveled booklet sent home from school, or you may work on sight words, and/or read to your child. If the homework note is ever lost, you can record the reading minutes, date, and title on any sheet of paper, or send me a note on our class Dojo (e.g.: "We read each day this week, I promise!" :-) ).
It MUST be turned in each Friday.
Homework reading log will be sent home on Mondays on the back of the Monday Message. It is due that Friday (see "homework" tab). Please click on the "homework" section of this website for more information.
The "Dojo Report" goes home EVERY Friday, and is expected to be signed and returned every Monday morning. I suggest signing it Friday evening, discussing it with your child, and putting it back into the backpack right away so that your child can turn it in Monday.
*I'm a stickler on this being returned signed, because it is a fantastic way for us to communicate!
The Dojo Report is a circle chart showing how your child did that week in class, behaviorally. There is a percentage in the center. It tells you the percentage of "good behavior" your child had, as well as showing how often points were missed for poor behavior. Of course, 100% would be awesome, but in my class, we look for growth, not perfection! Let's say a good score would be 80% or better. If the score falls below that, please speak with your child, speak with me, and hopefully we can see improvement.
"Fun Friday" is a fun way to praise students for responsible behavior and school/homework completion for the week. We may do science, cooking, art, gardening, watch a movie (that aligns with our themes), play math games, and more on these days. Students who did not earn Fun Friday will complete the work they didn't finish that week during "study hall" time, and write or draw pictures to show they understand their consequence.
All first graders can use extra help with:
* telling time to the nearest half-hour. Please take some time each day to notice the time, time spent on activities, time until the next activity (dinner, play time, etc.), etc.
* Working with pennies, dimes, and nickels (quarters are not taught in first grade, but certainly you can introduce them after your child has confidence with the other coins!). How many pennies in a nickel, dime? How many nickels in a dime? How many different ways can you show 24 cents using P, N, and D? ...etc....
* Learning addition and subtraction facts, to 10 (0+1 through 0+10, etc).
* Skip counting by 2's, 5's (nickels), and 10's (dimes), to 120.
